Get BUSY is an innovative youth engagement program that enables teens to promote health and well being among Club and community members while gaining valuable leadership skills. The program is based on a youth led, peer-to-peer mentoring model in which selected youth (age 13-18) within a Club come together under the mentorship of a staff leader.
Get BUSY has 3 main components – 1) identifying potential youth leaders and developing their leadership skills through retreats, workshops, mentorship and an Activity Day; 2) having these youth conduct a "walkabout" at their Club and community to assess areas where active healthy living can be enhanced; and 3) allowing youth leaders to lead physical activity and healthy eating activities for younger children (age 8-12) through Cool Moves. An additional diabetes education component has been added to help educate families on how healthy active living can help reduce the risk of diabetes in children and adults.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada is pleased to partner with Sun Life Financial and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to provide grants for Clubs interested in running the Get BUSY program during 2015-2016.
